Tikvesh Wine District

Tikvesh Wine District occupies all the area suitable for grapevine cultivation in the municipalities of Kavadarci, Negotino and Demir Kapija, as well as a part of the area of the Veles and Prilep municipalities. This wine district includes the plain and undulating terrains between the Veles Ravine in the north and the Demir Kapija Ravine in the south. Under the influence of the mediterranean climate from the south, the continental winds from the north, and the mountain climate, a particular modification of the mediterranean climate is formed in this wine district which is very favourable for grapevine growing. The annual rainfall is between 432 mm and 520 mm per square meter, while during the summer there are frequent periodic droughts when additional watering is necessary. All the wine district is covered by an irrigation system. The terrains under vineyards are undulating and hilly, with gentle slopes of varying aspects favourable for grapevine growing. Grapevine plantations are located at 110-550 metres above sea level. Grapevines are mostly planted on chernozem, rendzina and vertisol soils, and only occasionally on cinnamonic and diluvial soils.
